APPROACHABLE EXPERTISE
IN LEGAL MATTERS
MEET JIM
HOW I GOT STARTED
When I was at school, I always wanted to be a business lawyer. My father owned his own businesses, which inspired me. I discovered that the University of Queensland offered a combined Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) and Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree, and I couldn’t wait to enroll. I chose the finance stream in the Bachelor of Commerce and then completed the Bachelor of Laws.
I then undertook two years of Articles of Clerkship with a Brisbane CBD firm. After my admission as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland, I decided to venture to Melbourne to work as a corporate finance executive in a merchant bank. After that, I moved to Canberra, where I worked in development finance.
While at university, I excelled in Rugby Union, was awarded a Full Blue for the sport, and played for the Queensland Reds at the state level.
Upon returning to Brisbane, I joined MIM Holdings Limited, where I became Assistant Treasurer. Subsequently, I practiced law in Brisbane’s CBD for ten years before being headhunted back into industry, where I filled various executive leadership roles and was always wholly or partially responsible for the legal function.
During that time, I also served as President of the University of Queensland Football Club.
I have been living and practicing law on the Gold Coast for fifteen years now, having moved here 20 years ago.
Since moving to the Gold Coast, I served as a Board member of the Tweed Seagulls Rugby League Football Club for five years, until recently.
WHAT I AM PASSIONATE ABOUT
My main passion is to fulfill my profession and deliver services to clients in a timely and cost-effective manner. I also believe that lawyers and other professionals, well-versed as we are in the fundamentals of law, accounting, and other disciplines, should give back to the community by becoming involved in community initiatives and affairs. I have listed my community involvements on the Gold Coast elsewhere. I love sports and keeping fit; I am an avid paddler on Currumbin Creek, a swimmer, and I walk regularly.
I am also passionate about gardening and the outdoors in general. I tend to my garden, which includes 33 fruit trees, shrubs, and ground cover plants. I live in the mountainous hinterland of the Southern Gold Coast in the McPherson Ranges.
My 11 grandchildren are another passion of mine (2 in Tweed, 3 in Sydney, 1 on the Gold Coast, and 5 in Brisbane). Family takes up much of my spare time these days.
I am also passionate about how businesses should be run properly, as I have seen the devastating results of mismanagement. In recent years, I wrote a book called “Commendable Leadership In Business: The 7 Cs” and self-published it.
MY VALUES
My personal values are rooted in my religious upbringing and education at private schools. In Grade 12, I was School Captain and was awarded the prize for overall Character and Leadership. I also discovered Stephen Covey’s book, “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People,” which I strive to put into practice as much as possible. I consider it to be the best personal improvement book I have ever read. My main values are to “live up to your word and beliefs in all that you do and say” and “never say you can do something when you cannot give it the due attention it deserves.” I have found that these values have given me a sound reputation, benefiting both my clients and my family by ensuring I am the best person I can be. For me, values are a work in progress.
